This was inspired by the song & lyrics of Randy Disher, a character from the series Monk [link] . He wrote this song after resigning from the police force because he felt like a joke in the department despite being a lieutenant. When he was in high school (or college?), he had a band with his friends called "The Randy Disher Project" and he revived that when he quit the force. His captain (Capt. Stottlemeyer) came to see him and Randy performed a song with his band called "Don't Need A Badge", with its lyrics obviously a rant against the captain.
